The Sweet Truth: Why Tilt Uses Agave, Erythritol & Stevia (Not Artificial Sweeteners)

What sweetens your energy drink matters. A lot.

Most energy drinks are loaded with sugar or pumped full of artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame. Sure, they taste sweet — but they also come with bloating, headaches, weird aftertastes, and questionable long-term health effects.

We wanted Tilt Energy to taste incredible without wrecking your gut or spiking your blood sugar.

That’s why we chose a combo of agave, erythritol, and stevia — three naturally derived sweeteners that balance flavour, feel, and function.

Let’s break it down.


1. Agave – Natural sweetness with a smooth finish

Agave nectar is a naturally occurring syrup derived from the blue agave plant — the same one used to make tequila (cheers to that).

Why we use it:

  • Smooth, neutral sweetness

  • Doesn’t spike blood sugar like regular sugar

  • Helps balance acidity in fruit flavours

  • Adds body without the bloat

Agave gives Tilt that subtle, full sweetness you can feel, without feeling heavy.


2. Erythritol – Zero-calorie, gut-friendly sweetness

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, but not the kind that wrecks your stomach like sorbitol or maltitol. It’s actually:

  • Naturally found in fruits like pears and grapes

  • Virtually calorie-free

  • Digested differently — absorbed in the small intestine and excreted in urine (meaning no fermentation = no bloating)

Why we use it:

  • Adds volume and real sugar-like mouthfeel

  • No calories or crash

  • Doesn’t cause the same stomach issues that other sugar alcohols can

We use just enough erythritol to round out the sweetness — not so much that you notice it.


3. Stevia – The natural leaf that makes things pop

Stevia is extracted from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It’s 200–300x sweeter than sugar, so we use a tiny amount to brighten the flavour.

Why we use it:

  • Zero calories

  • Naturally plant-derived

  • Enhances other sweeteners (you get more from less)

  • No blood sugar spike

Some brands go overboard with stevia — that’s when it gets that bitter, metallic aftertaste. We dial it in just right, so it lifts the flavour without overpowering it.


Why we don’t use sucralose or aspartame

Artificial sweeteners are cheap. That’s why most energy drink brands use them.

But:

  • They can cause bloating and digestive discomfort

  • They often leave a chemical aftertaste

  • They’re linked to mixed health outcomes in studies

  • They don’t align with our promise of “Just Energy”

At Tilt, if we wouldn’t drink it daily ourselves, we won’t put it in the can.
